Selling ourselves

Yesterday a woman asked me
If wanted to do her a favor.

I was sitting on a bench with three of my socialist friends
Talking about workers rights and universal health care.

I looked on the woman’s clipboard
And noticed the words;
“Only 3% Above Prime!”

I interjected and told her that if she was trying
To sell us plastic cards of corporate deception
She could move on to more desirable demographic.

She then told us that she wanted to inform us
Of her wide selection of magazines.

Revolutionary Worker?” said the socialist with the purple hair.
Mother Jones?” said the socialist who is in a sorority of all things.
The Progressive?  The Nation?”  I asked.
“We have Sports Illustrated and Playboy!”

“Oh that’s good.  Offer to sell Playboy to us.
I’m gay,
she’s a woman,
And does he look like he’s into porn?” I asked
referring to the socialist with the purple hair.

The woman stammered.
We crushed her dreams.
No matter what she could try next
We would crush her capitalist dreams again.

Twenty years from now
When she’s a wife, mother of two kids,
And owner of a minivan or an urban assault vehicle
Or whatever is popular among soccer mom’s that week,

She might look back on her days when she had no cash
And had to sell credit cards and magazines
To already financially over-extended college kids.

And maybe she’ll remember us.
